Preparing for Your Trip
Visa Requirements
Before packing your bags, ensure you have the right documentation. Some countries do not require a visa to Uganda, while Most international visitors will need a visa to enter Uganda.

Fortunately, Uganda offers an eVisa system, the most convenient way to apply. Visit the official Immigration website of Uganda, fill out the application, and submit it with the necessary documents. Processing usually takes about three days, but it's wise to apply at least two weeks in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. Apply for your Visa here.
Health Considerations
Vaccinations are essential when traveling to Uganda. The country requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry. Additionally, consider vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, cholera, and rabies, depending on your itinerary. Malaria is prevalent in Uganda, so consult your doctor about antimalarial medication.
What to Pack
Uganda's climate varies, but Kampala is generally warm and wet. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, a sturdy pair of walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket. Don’t forget your sunscreen, insect repellent, and any personal medications.
Arriving in Kampala
Getting from the Airport
Entebbe International Airport, located about 40 km from Kampala, is your gateway to Uganda. Upon arrival, you can choose from several transportation options to Kampala:
Airport Taxis: These are readily available and can be found outside the arrivals hall. Ensure to use a licensed taxi and agree on the fare before departing. If you need reservations for Airport Pickup, get in touch ahead of time with one of our Volunteers, Fanny who can assist you in arranging a pickup!
Airport Shuttles: Some hotels offer shuttle services from the airport. Check with your accommodation beforehand to see if this is available.
Car Hire: For more freedom, consider renting a car. Several reputable companies operate at the airport.
Traveling to Kampala by Bus from Neighboring Countries
For our East African attendees considering a journey by land, traveling by bus to Kampala is a viable and often scenic option. Several reputable bus companies operate crossborder services from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Sudan. Here’s how you can plan a smooth bus trip to attend PyCon Uganda 2024:
Choosing a Bus Service
From Kenya: Several bus companies operate between Nairobi and Kampala, with services typically taking around 1214 hours. Look for companies like Easy Coach, Modern Coast, or Mash Poa, which offer comfortable seating and are known for their reliability.
From Rwanda: From Kigali to Kampala, the journey can take about 8-10 hours. Operators such as Jaguar Executive Coaches and Trinity Express provide daily services between these two cities.
From Tanzania: Dar-es-Salaam to Kampala is a longer route, typically taking upwards of 24 hours. Companies like Mash POA Coach and Modern Coast offer bus services that are comfortable and well-equipped for long journeys. Alternatively, you can connect from Tanzania to Nairobi and from Nairobi to Kampala.
Also depending on which part of Tanzania you're from, you can take a bus to Mwanza, then book a flight to Entebbe International Airport!
From South Sudan: Buses from Juba to Kampala run regularly, and the journey usually takes around 10-12 hours. Companies like Eco Bus, and California Bus offer this route with several departures a week.
Booking Your Tickets
It’s advisable to book your bus ticket in advance, especially during the busy season or around major events like PyCon. You can book tickets online, through booking agents, or directly at the bus company’s offices. Ensure to verify the credibility of the bus service through online reviews and recommendations.
Crossing Borders
When traveling by bus across borders in East Africa, remember to have all your travel documents ready. This includes your passport, visa (if required), and any other necessary travel documents. Border crossings can take time due to immigration procedures, so prepare for potential delays.
What to Carry during Your Journey
For a comfortable journey, pack light but include essentials:
Water and snacks: Have enough to last you the journey, especially between major stops.
Warm clothing: It can get chilly, particularly if you’re traveling at night or early in the morning or from the southern part of Uganda.
Entertainment: Bring a book, and download podcasts, or music to keep you entertained.
Travel pillow and blanket: Enhance your comfort, especially on longer trips.
Arrival in Kampala
Most international buses will drop you off at various bus terminals in Kampala, such as the Trinity Bus Station or the Global Coaches Bus Terminal. From there, you can take a taxi or a bodaboda (motorcycle taxi we recommend installing the SafeBoda App especially if you are not familiar with Kampala). With Safe boda you don’t need to bargain for a fair as the App will automatically calculate, The Good thing with Safeboda, is you can also order a Car (SafeCar) without having to install Bolt or Uber!
Local Currency
The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the local currency. While credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, cash is king in local markets and smaller establishments. It’s advisable to exchange some money at the airport or in advance for convenience.
Attending PyCon Uganda 2024

PyCon Uganda 2024 will be held at IREC, located in the heart of the city along Old Portbel Road. The conference will span five days and include workshops, keynote speeches, and networking events. Make sure to check the PyCon Uganda website for the detailed schedule and plan your days accordingly.

PyCon is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded professionals and enthusiasts. Bring plenty of business cards, and don’t hesitate to join discussions. Attending workshops and speaker sessions is also a great way to connect with others who share your interests.
Exploring Kampala
Cultural Sites
When you’re not at the conference, take some time to explore Kampala’s rich cultural landscape. Visit the Uganda Museum to learn about the country’s history, the magnificent Kasubi Tombs, or the National Mosque for breathtaking views over the city. These sites might require some entry fees!
Dining and Cuisine
Ugandan cuisine is a delightful experience. Try local dishes like matooke (steamed bananas), luwombo (a traditional stew), and Rolex (a chapati filled with eggs and vegetables). Kampala also offers a variety of international cuisines, so there’s something for every palate.
Safety Tips
While Kampala is generally safe for tourists, it’s wise to take standard precautions. Avoid carrying large sums of cash, keep valuables secure, and be cautious in crowded places, especially downtown Kampala.
If you are unfamiliar with the places, be cautious about moving alone late at night and at all costs avoid crowded places.
